How to make your packaged site live! January 31st, 2008
- posted in: Tips and Tricks
Once you have got your new website files back from YoDiv (reminder: you can download them at any time from the Studio) you will probably want to put them on the internet so that the world can see your fantastic new website, and marvel at your design work.
This shouldn’t be too hard, and you can do this your self, but you will need some essentials:
Domain Name:
If you haven’t already bought it, now is the time to buy your domain name. Try and use a supplier who will package some webspace. For small websites someone like 1&1, or for larger sites try a supplier like (mt) Media Temple.
Publishing:
Once you have your domain name, and hopefully some free space, you need to load your files. The files we have supplied will be web pages (.htm), style sheets (.css) and images (.gif/.jpg). Your packaged site from YoDiv is working, tested and ready to load to your web space. This is normally done via ‘FTP’, so you will need the ftp details for your webspace, and a good program (eg Filezilla or Cute FTP). Use the ftp program to copy your files to your webspace, and once complete you should see your site on the internet.
Other options:
If you need to add extra functions (a form / blog / shop) to your website you may need some different types of web hosting. We’re happy to talk to you about these when you start your YoDiv job, and can normally supply webspace / technology for any size and shape of site.
